K-ON! Episode 01

K-ON!

The Spring anime season has kicked off, and one of the first shows I’ve watched is K-ON! – AniDB describes the story as “about four high school girls that try to sustain their school’s popular music club despite being unable to read music or play instruments.” Sounds great, right?

Why are my fingers like this?! Whyyy?!

Why are my fingers like this?! Whyyy?!

Not much happens, as it’s the first episode and is mainly just establishing the situation, etc. Spoilers may be ahead, but like I said, the first episode is usually already explained by the simple plot summaries you find on AniDB, etc. The episode starts off with Hirasawa Yui being late for her first day of high school. Upon getting to school, she finds out that there are many clubs available, and her friend scares her into joining one (if you do not join a club you will become a NEET!). She doesn’t have many skills, but she thinks the light music club sounds interesting, so applies. Little does she know that the club is desperate for a fourth member so that they can meet the school’s minimum member requirement, so she goes to the club intent on saying she shouldn’t've joined because she can’t actually play an instrument. After much begging on the part of the existing three club members, Yui can’t help but say she’ll join, and even goes so far as to say she’ll learn how to play the guitar!

I've got it! If someone joins our club, we'll do their homework for them!

So far it seems like a fun anime with decent animation, and hopefully we’ll hear some decent music in the upcoming episodes! Don’t expect the animation to stay at this quality, though, as first episodes always receive the most production attention.

Yay! First episode of K-ON!

Have any of you watched this show? If so, what did you think of its first episode?

  1. Aliz Said,

Have yet to watch but I have high hopes for the series. And considering its a KyoAni production the animation quality has a good chance of being quite good throughout the series.

well, as for the animation – it wasnt that good at all. its true that backgrounds and so were nicely done but characters drawing were sometimes lacking in quality. so i hope it wont get worse than in the first ep…

Just watched the first episode, and whoever released the first script deserves to die. By that I mean whoever did that fake coalguys release, the first one to be released.

ya that was annoying, when I saw the font I wanted to cry, but a fellow stalker of coalguys notified me of it’s fakenessness…. anywho I loved the first ep, especially the ED fits well for both the characters and maybe even the voice actors whose names I dont recognize too much

I must agree that the animation quality was terrible. However, I’ve seen plenty of series get better over time so the notion that the first episode receives all the bling time is hardly universal. Anyway, to move on, the script was a bit empty, but the situation it sets is promising for future episodes. The opening theme tries to be of the hyper-moe-pop variety, but pales in comparison to Hatenade Wasshoi. I like the closing theme better. The characters appear a bit superficial at the moment, but maybe we’re only supposed to get to know them in a few episodes. I will watch episode two and see what happens.

I personally didn’t notice as much of the “Moe” as was being describe before the show even aired; but I think it has potential, so I’ll stick with it for the next few episodes and decide then.

    1) OP and ED are awesome
    B) It’s random and pointless, but funny, and that’s the whole point. Who cares if animation isn’t brilliant.
iii) I’m taking Akiba (from Kannagi)’s side by not going “MOE~” cos that’s silly.
    Z) Yui reminds me a little of Osaka from Azumanga. There’s no way Yui can come anywhere close, but the character traits are similar.

I’m definitely gonna follow this series, though I hope it picks up the pace a bit more. 1st ep felt a little slow.

I’ve had a lot of fun through the 6 episodes already aired. I play the bass guitar so I found myself remembering many things and that was great. Love Yui and Mio the most but in fact I love the four of them. The songs for opening and ending are awesome!

In short, a great series. I will be following like a religion
